Interview with Moyra Wainwright aged 62 years
One of our nursing volunteers recently ran the Knysna Half Marathon (21.1kms) during the well-known Oyster Festival. At the age of 62 Moyra who is a seasoned marathon runner qualified for the ‘Grand Master’ category and finished the race in 2hrs and 14mins putting her in 2nd place for her category! Moyra lives in Johannesburg but spends her summers here in Knysna where she volunteers for us. She is a Hospice Palliative Care trained nurse and also volunteers as a relief nurse at Wits Hospice in Johannesburg.
This is an incredible accomplishment in itself and worth mentioning is that this was Moyra’s first race after recovering from a bunion and hammer toe correction operation which has left her with steel pins in her toes!
Moyra says that the conditions were less than favourable during the race as the heavy rain the day before had left the terrain extremely muddy and the racers sometimes had to run the hilly terrain in single file. However she added that despite this, she had “great fun”!
We commend Moyra on her speedy recovery from her foot operation and fantastic achievement during the marathon!
