We offer the following courses and information sessions.

Knysna Sedgefield Hospice have taken the lead in preparing healthcare workers to support patients and families.

We have developed and piloted an online short-course entitled Palliative Care, which is open to any health or psychosocial services professionals who could become members of palliative care teams.

Bereavement Training Course

Aim:
Our society does not prepare us for the violence of emotions which can be experienced after the death of a loved person. Sometimes grieving people think they are going “mad” as they struggle with conflicting feelings. Support of a caring person can be of great value in the weeks, months following the death. This person walks alongside and can offer both counselling and practical assistance.

Who will benefit: Community members who support families who are experiencing grief

Introduction To Palliative Care Course For Professionals

The World Health Organisation defines Palliative Care as follows: “Palliative Care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering, the early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual. Palliative care includes all aspects of care, medical and non-medical and as such is described as total care.”
Aim:
The aim of this course is to teach learners that Palliative Care:

  • Provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms
  • Affirms life and death as a normal process
  • Intends neither to hasten or postpone death
  • Integrates the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care
  • Offers a support system to help patients live as actively as possible until death
  • Offers a support system to help the family cope during the patient’s illness and in their bereavement
  • Uses a team approach to address the needs of patients and their families, including bereavement counselling, if indicate
  • Will enhance quality of life, and will positively influence the course of illness
  • Is applicable early in the course of illness, in conjunction with other therapies that are implemented to prolong life, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and includes those investigations needed to better understand and manage distressing clinical complications

PCOP – Palliative Care For Older Persons Training

Aim:
Focusing on how Palliative Care will improve the care and quality of life of older people
Content Covered:

  • The aging process and functional decline
  • Palliative Care for the eledrely
  • Trauma in the eldery
  • Pain and symptom management
  • The dying patient

Caregivers Course

Aim:
For all to be able to understand the needs of an ill person at any stage of their illness as well as helping them to deal with emotional/spiritual/psychosocial and physical changes that may be part of their illness.

  • The benefits of Palliative Care
  • Dealing with different losses
  • Spiritual and Cultural care
  • The Caring Relationship

Cancer and non-Cancer Palliative Care
This course is a Hospice Palliative Care Association standardized course.
