About Us
Care for the Carer
Funding was granted by the Isisombululo Programme for a two year research project linked to the holistic approach of caring for the carers by addressing issues of burnout and high stress levels which arise from working with impoverished families and terminally ill people. The “carers” include 45 staff and volunteers from hospice and other partner organisations working within the community.

Admission Criteria
Access to Hospice services as per the criteria in our mission statement can be done as follows:
  • Referral by a private medical practitioner
  • Referral by a clinic or provincial hospital
  • Family or self referral with a complete medical history
Palliative care patients will be contacted within 24 hours of referral. Chronic care patients will be contacted within a week of referral. In instances where the patient does not meet our referral criteria, we will suggest and facilitate alternative service providers.

What is the impact of hospice in our community?
On a monthly basis over 400 patients with an additional 2 000 family members are cared for by 26 service delivery staff. An average of 13 500 kilometres are traveled in 10 vehicles making over 1,500 visits per month. The figures reflected below show the average numbers of both direct beneficiaries (patients) and indirect beneficiaries (family members/primary carers) cared for last year.

Mission
Our aim is to serve the community by providing palliative home-based nursing care for persons with progressive incurable and chronic debilitating diseases. Our holistic care extends to the families prior to and during the bereavement period.

Training
Caregivers Course - Hospice Knysna will be running a "Caregiver Course' for volunteer caregivers, beginning on Monday 4th May for 9 weeks.

    Donor Club Winners

    The recent Donor Club draw took place on 19th July, 2010 about 15t minutes after our third prize winner had paid their dues!! The second prize winner commented on his way out of the building - 'please phone me to tell me I have won a prize'. Witnessed by 3 Managerial staff and with a random number computer draw - such was the result. First prize was won by one of our first members who was delighted with his success! And so the results....
